Traveling to Rumbur Valley-Land of Kalash people

We all know about certain destinations that we must see in our lifetime, places like London, Paris, New York, Pyramid of Giza in Egypt and so on. But there is a places where we should travel to experience the unique culture and tradition. This idea drive me all the way to Rumbur Valley, place where one amazing group of people live- Kalash tribe.

Rumbur Valley is located northeast Pakistan and near the Afghanistan border. This is one of the three location where this tribe is located. On the beggining i will tell you bit more about Kalash tribe , who they are and why they are so unique.

kalash tradition

Kalash tribe is ancient tribe , many claim is from the time when Alexander The Great was in that area. After he couldn`t take India part of his army left behind and make a villages married will local people there and thats how some people claim that Kalash tribe was made. They have nothing to do with Pakitan tradition they look so different and language and culture are different as well.

As a Macedonian was fascinate to go to the tribe that has something with my ancient roots. After i saw some of them visiting Macedonia few years ago i start reading and discovering many things about them. Than i decide to go there and stay a bit with them and learn their way of living and culture.I organize my trip and soon as i got my visa i took a flight to Pakistan.

Arrive in Islamabad after two days spend in the city and organizing my trip to Kalash village. Private car from a local person that have a roots from this tribe come to pick me up and we were ready for travel. Road to the valley is a special , some amazing scenery and fantastic mountains peaks. When we get there i was welcomed by the group of young people dressed up in the traditional dress. To be honest this dress code was resemble like some villages in Macedonia which gave me some idea that might have something with ancient Macedonians.

Kalash Tribe live off the grid , no electricity , no modern technology , they dont watch TV they dont listen radio they dont have Facebook , Instagram, Twitter accounts they do not use make ups or other modern things that modern people use. No phones no cameras. They were amazed with the technology that i brought with me.

kalash nature

Every time when i was using my cameras and all this technique i felt like im from another planet 🙂 They were amazed but yet no interest in using. Their day start very early – 5 am sometime earlier basically they start their day on sunrise and finish on sunset.

Apart from their mystic emanation the Kalash people possess loving, cordial and responsive character and they are famous for their dancing, music, and their religious traditions. In fact they have everything exclusive like their costumes, beliefs, traditions and festivals.  The Kalash people are polytheists and their religion has mythical feature having a strong connection of thriving the spirituality in their soils from the universe. There is eminent importance of the music and dance in their religious obligations. Many of the people from Kalash community have accepted Islam as, Islam being the dominant religion in this area yet the remaining Kalash community believes to maintain their strong identity. Even the people who have converted themselves as Muslims are also still living nearby in the Kalash villages and carry on their language and culture.

kalash dance

The Kalash people celebrate three main festivals: Joshi, Uchau and Chawmos. Joshi is a festival held in the month of May in which the gratitude is expressed to the spring season. Uchau is conducted in autumn. The most important festival is the Chawmos which is celebrated for two weeks when winter is at its peak in the month of December. Having much of music and dancing this festival marks the end of the year’s fieldwork and harvest. Sheep and goats are sacrificed on this occasion.

The traditional dressing of Kalash people also have a major attraction for the tourists coming to this area. The Kalash women wear a dress containing a black robe and an embellished cap with decorations of cowrie shells, ornaments and beads. Men usually use the Pakistani shalwar kameez, while Kalash children wear small versions of adult clothing after the age of four.

kalash village

The government of Pakistan has always put efforts to preserve the Kalash tribe with their genuine customs, clothes, religion and beliefs. However their populations is continuously decreasing due to the most of them are embracing Islam and presently the Kalash people are deemed as one of the world’s endangered minority communities.

kalash food

The region is extremely fertile, covering the mountainside in rich oak forests and allowing for intensive agriculture, despite the fact that most of the work is done not by machinery, but by hand. The powerful and dangerous rivers that flow through the valleys have been harnessed to power grinding mills and to water the farm fields through the use of ingenious irrigation channels. Wheat, maize, grapes(generally used for wine), apples, apricots and walnuts are among the many foodstuffs grown in the area, along with surplus fodder used for feeding the livestock.

The climate is typical of high elevation regions without large bodies of water to regulate the temperature. The summers are mild and agreeable with average maximum temperatures between 23° and 27 °C (73° – 81 °F). Winters, on the other hand, can be very cold, with average minimum temperatures between 2° and 1 °C (36° – 34 °F). The average yearly precipitation is 700 to 800 mm (28 – 32 inches).

Living with this people for all that time help me to learn a lot of about appreciation and i learn to be grateful for little thing we have . They live a happy simple life. We dont need so many technology to be able to enjoy in nature and happiness.
