Predjama castle Slovenia – Stone beauty build up in the rocks

Slovenia as a  country has many beauties to show . Wonderful mountains, clear rivers and many castles. One of them is Predjama castle, for me one of the most beautiful castles in Europe and in the world.

Predjama castle is located in south central part of Slovenia near the village Predjama and near to the famous touristic attraction Postojna Cave. I was visiting Slovenia for many times , but i never see beauty like that before. Build in Renaissance style and on unique place Predjama will grab your attention straight away.

Castle is build into the rocks… look like is part of that rock formation and perfectly standing there . Castle was own by the Erazem who have lot of controversial connect with his name.

How to get to Predjama castle

From Ljubljana there is a train and also bus to Postojna . From there you need to walk or take a local taxi to Predjama.Trieste , Koper and some other cities in the area v good connected with Predjama. If you use a car you can drive on the A1 highway and get to the Predjama Castle. When i got there i use a car. I rent the car in Ljubljana, not much expensive and convenient. After around 40 min driving we arrive at the Predjama castle.

This place is not far from the Postojna Cave.First thing what come to my mind when i saw that structure was- wow.. They build up the whole castle into the rocks.

I was curious to see what is inside and how big is Predjama from inside.

Picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious and impregnable, it has been dominating the surrounding area, perched high up in the 123-metre high cliff, for more than 800 years. It is listed among the Guinness World Records as the largest cave castle in the world.

The castle offers a unique insight into the construction techniques and ingenuity of medieval people who came here searching for a safe haven right at the entrance to the cave. During a siege in the 15th century, the castle offered refuge to its most famous and notorious owner – Erazem of Predjama. The appealing and inspiring legend about the brave robber baron Erazem, who had remained undefeated until he was betrayed by one of his servants, still lives on in the common lore, and rightly so as the gallant knight resisted the besiegers inside his safe castle for over a year without any major problems.

The karstic terrain beneath the castle with its cave system was an excellent choice. It provided Erazem and his people with a secret passage that lead to freedom, a source of drinking water, a further place for hiding and storage of food – everything that turned out to be indispensable, invaluable and essential during the siege.

Between May and September, visitors are also able to have a look around the picturesque Cave under Predjama Castle. Due to its location and favourable temperatures the cave is inhabited by a colony of bats, as a result of which visitors have no access to it during the bats’ hibernation.

A vertical natural shaft leads out of the original castle, which Erazem ordered to be enlarged, and leads to the exit located at the top of the cliff, 25 meters away from the cliff’s edge. This shaft allowed Erazem to secretly supply the castle with food in the time of the siege; he also used it to continue with his robberies.

The castle keep to fascinate people that visit this place. Predjama is for sure something that is worth to be seen if you travel to Slovenia

Around the Postojna village there is many accommodations so would be easy to find what is best for you. Prices are from 45-75 euros but also you must have on mind that due lot of people coming there you must booked in advance.

You can camp around the area, this is what ive done. View on the castle from nearby forests is facinating…
